🌍 New Series: Meet the Earth System Models powering our project
Here we’ll introduce the five cutting-edge Earth System Models (ESMs) we’re working with — each a unique window into our planet’s climate and biosphere.
We’ll explore what makes them special, the science they enable, and how our project will advance their capabilities.
1️⃣ ICON-ESM – The world’s first fully coupled Earth System Model using an icosahedral grid, delivering uniform global resolution and paving the way for machine-learning-enhanced climate simulations.
2️⃣ UKESM – The UK’s flagship climate model, combining detailed atmosphere–ocean physics with interactive carbon cycle, chemistry, and feedback processes for policy-relevant climate projections.
3️⃣ EC-EARTH – A pan-European Earth System Model uniting weather and climate expertise to simulate atmosphere, ocean, and ecosystems in a community-driven framework distinguished by its flexibility and configurability.
4️⃣ CNRM-ESM – A French-led climate–biosphere model who’s high-resolution ocean model allows for detailed simulations of ocean currents, temperature, and chemistry, and their interactions with the atmosphere.
5️⃣ IPSL-CM – A fully integrated Paris-developed model to study Earth’s interconnected systems focusing on the impacts of climate change on the ocean and land ecosystems, thanks to its comprehensive ocean biogeochemistry and land components.
