Bringing models together to better understand mortality in Earth system science 🌍
Over the past three days, we hosted a hackathon on benchmarking mortality across diverse ecosystem models, bringing together international teams working on models such as CABLE-POP, SEIB, BiomeE, FATES, JSBACH, JULES-RED, LPJ-GUESS, ORCHIDEE, and EDv3.
From sharing data insights and model approaches to hands-on collaborative work, the goal was clear:
➡️ develop a common benchmarking framework
➡️ align on simulation protocols and key metrics
➡️ identify robust patterns and research questions for a joint publication
The hackathon combined intense discussions, breakout sessions, and cross-time-zone collaboration — culminating in first results, a clearer benchmarking strategy, and concrete next steps for a joint paper.
A big thank you to everyone involved for the open exchange, collaborative spirit, and scientific momentum! 🚀
